This film is a conglomeration of Bram Stokers and the original nosferatu, and fails at both. Poor Willem Defoe, trying his hardest. Horrible acting, nonsensical actions, bad "artistic" choices, nonexistent plot, weak non believable conclusion. Why does the vampire have asthma? How is he defeated because of bad time management issues? Why did this start as a scene for scene copy of Bram Stoker? Then switch midway to a failed attempt at "art"? Did they change directors midway into shooting? Don't waste your time, don't wrack your brain trying to make sense of this potpourri of a movie. Watch the original nosferatu or the original Bram Stoker.
