Far-fetched but loosely based on a true story. Seems to me that most of the 1982 film critical commentary turns out to be rather absurd. True the last 45 minutes of the film are impossible, predictable, and contrived. But when has that ever prevented a film that crosses espionage with science fiction from being well worth watching? My hunch is that the biggest reason critics panned this film is that the timing was wrong (1982 was Glasnost, not the Cold War). Second, Clint Eastwood was a gunslinger but not in a cowboy western. If only the same disgruntled people could have waited to watch "Cowboys and Aliens" (Daniel Craig).
