This game gets a lot of mixed reviews. I always liked the core mechanics of digimon world 1 for ps1 but the flaws of that game were very noticeable. This game gives the player the information need to play it successfully and adds many quality of life features as you recruit digimon and rebuild the city.
For those that didn't play Digimon World 1 on ps1. This game you raise digimon from their baby stage to Mega. You have two digimon that you raise and they have a life span where they die and return to eggs and hatch as babies. There are perk trees for longevity of life and stat inheritance so progress is definitely made even if your digimon dies. Later in the game you can extend your digimons life with certain foods to keep them for a long time. One of the things people knock the game for is a digimon living 20-23 days maximum that is true for much of the game but I did have an Imperialdramon Paladin Mode go over 40 days and still have a lot of life left. Another criticism is that you spend all your time in the gym training stats. It is true you do spend a good deal of time training stats but there are points in a digimons progression the best course of getting stats by battling digimon and getting post battle stat rewards in addition to the items and money.
As far as potential negatives for some people that don't really bug me. This game can feel to like you have to micromanage all the time you have to get the most out of it. Especially to take advantage of windows of time where your digimon are at their peak to make progress before they die. Some people don't like pet simulator aspect of it or the battle system where largely the digimon fight without control until you give orders. If you are looking more basic rpg battle system go for the cyber sleuth games.
The only really big thing I'd change is adding a new game plus option where your tamer level, attacks learned, card collection and field guide progress carried over. I like playing the post game but a second playthrough rebuilding the city again with a little head start would be excellent.
