"One Eyed Jacks" is an excellent movie, albeit often overlooked for it's unusually sophisticated social message; seldom seen in the western genre of the day. It's a1961 adult western drama, directed and starred by Marlon Brando. Brando's performance as "Rio" is "mesmerizing" and confirms why he's considered one of America's best male actors of the 20th century. He's supported by a stellar cast of Karl Malden, Katy Jurado, Ben Johnson, and Pina Pellicer. The acting and technical aspects of the film are superb.
Rio and his partner "Dad" (Malden) are notorious criminals running from Mexican authorities. Dad, in a double cross, abandon's Rio to be captured. Rio then serves years in a Mexican prison hell hole. Once free of prison, Rio begins his vendetta against Dad, who is now a respected lawman, civic leader, husband and father in a coastal CA community.
No spoilers but, this revenge journey will keep the viewer rivited. The theme suggests that maybe evil, real evil, often comes disguised as redemption and salvation. There's much relevance to our current U.S. polarized politics, and it's affect on our humanity. Who are the good guys and who are the antagonists, and ultimately does moral "justice" always triumph?
