I hate this book. This was the single worst book I have ever read. Every book I read, I now read in spite of this book; seeing how much better every other book handles every single topic in this book.
-The themes were heavy handed
-The characters’ appearances weren’t described at all through the book, making the revelation that George is much bigger than the bully very confusing
-Many characters are forgettable, blending together
-There are characters that serve one purpose through the whole book, and practically never do anything of value (E.G. George’s girlfriend, of whom I forgot the name of, who was rarely, if ever, mentioned prior to George getting in a relationship with her, and is suddenly dating him. She serves the only purpose of “George’s girlfriend, and his motivation”)
-The plot lines were cluttered, rushed, and confusing
-The bully, rather than just being racist for the sake of being racist (which would be a lot more believable), is racist because his mom was going out with a Native American, who got his brother hurt, which makes zero sense
-Characters are introduced very late on, who appear once, yet get an entire explanation on who they are, and what they’re like, despite having approximately one line of dialogue
-LEWIS SUCKS!!!! He acts like racism is the crux of his problems, which, in all honesty, very well could play a part in his unpopularity, but the real problem is that HE’S AN INSENSITIVE, RUDE, PRIDEFUL DOUCHEBAG!!!!
-Albert has some ✨mystery condition✨ that renders him an older brother, yet still giving him the benefit of having fought in a war, gaining him fake sympathy points
-The ending leaves so many plots unexplained. For example: what happened to the bully? He just continued to suck???
There are only two things I like about this book: The final act, and Uncle Albert
The final act is what the book should have been. It doesn’t try to tackle too much, it highlights the class disparity between Lewis and George, and it genuinely shines light on what some people have to live with
And, of course, the definitive best part of the book: Uncle Albert. Albert is just the best character in the whole book. He’s funny, he’s caring, he genuinely tries to steer Lewis in the right direction, and every scene he’s in is just a delight, solely because of him. If this book is a 0/15, Albert makes it a 1/15
Overall: if you value your sanity, and like to not read dragging, grating, terrible books, then DO NOT READ!!!
