I found it contrived...for the purpose of moving a story along... and the events improbable. I enjoyed some of the historical elements, especially the emigrant aspect and 1920s and 1930s America. But overall I felt that the characters lacked depth because we are simply told what they do most of the time, rather than getting into their minds. Also its very male. Women are accessories to the male characters. And Polish girls of the 1920s would not have behaved on the emigrant ship as depicted!
