For years, I had avoided watching this film because I believed it was based on actual events. However, I stumbled upon a documentary that explored the cultural impact, longevity, and worldwide phenomenon of the myth and lore surrounding the story. After realizing it was fiction, I decided to watch the original and the entire series of films. Admittedly, I went into the movie with low expectations about the special effects and put that aside so I could enjoy the story and nostalgia of a film that was so popular in the 70s.
Overall, the film was good. However, I think the filmmakers could have done better regarding the origin story of the demon. I found it confusing that discovering an artifact with no tale would lead to an exorcism in the United States halfway around the world.
Linda Blair’s performance was exceptional! Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the rest of the cast. As a former stage manager, it seemed to me that a lot of the acting came across as mechanical. A more organic approach would have vastly improved the film overall. Perhaps that's directorial choice given it applied to so many of the actors, I just don't know.
Despite these issues, I'm giving this film three stars. Although I don't know if they intended to make a sequel, I can fully appreciate why this film was such a blockbuster in its time, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the story unfolds. I hope that we learn a little bit about Father Merrin’s death and where the evil entity went after presumably exiting his deceased body. It was left ambiguous, and as a horror fan, I appreciate that.
