Anwar is a movie which always had a connection with me, I grew up listening to “Maula Mere Maula” and “Jared’s Zindagi”. This movie contains a lot of symbolism and each scene has meaning. I highly recommend this movie to those who can easily detect symbolism and understand the movie much more than just the plot. The characters are wonderfully described, you get to see the background of every character. Over the course of the movie, we get to see multiple love stories, some that are incomplete and others are tragic. Master Pasha (played by Vijay Raaz) shows second chance love, he loved someone, she died, and then he wanted to make a building similar to the idea of Taj Mahal for her. However, he starts liking this other girl which eventually rejects him; which leads to his tragic end. This movie also has the idea of people using each other for their own benefit, from the minister to the news reporter to the police officer.
Main Characters:
Mehru’s character is shown to be this girl who wants to go to America and she is tired of India and their opinion on Muslims. Nauheed Cyrusi placed the role of Mehru beautifully; from the outfits to the makeup and overall expressions.
Anwar’s character is a Muslim who lives in Lucknow, India; he falls in love with Mehru but instead she starts liking Udit, his friend, and they run away. He is shown at different stages of love, from falling in love to dying in guilt of love. Siddharth Koirala acted finely in this role, lowkey underrated.
