Summary: One of the most dynamic and fun FPS ever, strong player base, game still is updated and being managed by devs, tons of media out there. Spend a few months to try it out (yes this game has so many layers just one fast play won't show you what it is all about).
Oh my God (said in a good surprising way that God gifts cool thing), this game . . . It is one of the most dynamic FPS's I've played (read on background later so see my creds on this judgement call). It also was one of the only FPS to win game of the year, and it changed the FPS genre in a way that Doom did.
So if trying it out, you have to spend a few months. Now don't get scared you can wait for play for free, but its only $20 to purchase since its an older game . . .
They have tons of characters, and so even if you "beat" the game with one character (I guess this means achieving grand master level), you can go through with all the others.
And there are lots of styles of play. You don't even have to have good aim. So while games like CSGO honor the fast reaction knifers and god like aim, you can get away with bad aim but good knowledge of the game and positioning.
It is only online and multiplayer, and it is team based. The thing is though for most of the ranks (until platinum and above) the "team" thing is iffy and people don't communicate and play coordinated until later ranks . . .
Also the community is very good, but also can be just as toxic, and people will cut you down. And you have to have a thick skin. Also to keep going in this game you have to let go of wins and even the game stats (and what people tell you). Most of the randos don't know how to play. Find experts (Overwatch League players, streams or youtube or on the forums) and do your research on your experts).
On the other note, though the player base has gotten smaller since inception and the game lacks incentives to revitalize FPSs player base that competitors do (like free to play etc) and with constant updates, the game still is going strong. There are really dedicated players, and though many might be high level
Also another note: the developers still patch the game. So far major developments (new characters or maps or gameplay types) have been suspended due to development of this game's sequel.
There have been streamers / youtubers that leave OW, and their subscriber / viewer base takes a hit, and they return.
A really great game. Give it a chance and it will show you the many reasons and layers .
At bit of background:
And though young, my bf (older than me) introduced me to shooters as part of our getting to know each other. So we started out with Wolfenstein 3D and went up from there (imaging using an app to control software as the game runs too fast on modern PC's) . . . Note able ones are Halflife / TF 1n2 / SW Dark Forces and Jedi Knight series
Fast forward to OW, we knew it was out from the beginning, but we got stuck in Mechwarrior Online (one of my love's favorites is the Mechwarrior PC series starting from MW 2 . . .) but we got tired of it, as its huge money drain . . . He got into OW in late 2018 but I only got into it this year . . .
