This movie is horrifically racist towards the indigenous populations of South America. The Spanish were brutal (google conquistadors if you don't understand who Tulio and Miguel represent in this fictional world) to the indigenous civilizations across South America, as were all European colonizers that invaded the Americas. In no way did the indigenous people of South America view the Conquistadors as God-like or have any of the relations shared between the two main protagonists as depicted in the film. This mindset that Spaniards are more attractive, intelligent, and worthy is a continuous narrative that is so prominent in South American countries that people primarily of indigenous ancestry do not acknowledge and sometimes is embarrassed by their history because of the effects of colonization. Movies like this are just annoying to watch because it feeds the false narrative that the invasion of the Americas was not as ruthless as presumed. I understand the film was made in 2000, but what currently upsets me is the constant praise it receives in these comments. If you condemn films like Pocahontas, consider striking this film from your movie-watching list.
