I was immediately confused about whether Roger and Marine were British people who were in France for some reason (and on some contrived pretext, a la Death in Paradise, were going to end up investigating crimes in France), or whether they were British actors playing French people. After a while I realised it was the latter. That approach worked well in Van Der Valk, but I thought it really ham fisted and unconvincing here. And then to let us know if a particular character is NOT French (like the Italian man), the actor speaks in English with an “Italian” accent. Interesting to see (if I can be bothered watching more) what accents any British characters adopt. In a very contrived scene, Marine conveniently explains to the viewer the different roles of judges in adversarial, versus inquisitorial, systems. Pretty scenery, but not much else to recommend it.
