I've been reading through the series and they've been getting steadily more "soapy" concentrating on the lives of the police detectives rather than the main crime of the novel. SPOILER! The ending was rushed and the culprits were nowhere to be seen in all but the last 5 or 6 pages. Almost as if all of the lines of enquiry and clues in the previous chapters meant nothing at all and the author just went "this'll do" so I can finish it as it's going nowhere. Shame as the series started strongly.

A book about the plight facing refugees when they flee their home country. Uses the premise of portals to instantly trabsport people to a new country to get around writing about their trauma of the actual journey. However the book just feels like a poorly written sci-fi adventure with a boring love story tacked onto it. Surely, one of the main horrors people are exposed to when forced to flee is the journey. Washing over this makes their experience meaningless.
