Just an excellent version of a story by Victor Hugo of Christian self redemption by a man who spent years and years in hard labor in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. Over and over, an overzealous policeman who had once turned in his own mother on the belief that all criminal acts are caused by intrinsic evil, pursues the released Jean val John on his own belief that val Jean must be permanently evil, and thus himself good for turning in his own mother. In the end the policeman does not admit that val Jean is a merciful, good man, but he does drown himself rather than admit the truth. Fabulous British actors. The production is a treasure.
