I loved all the seasons in this show. everyone is mad at the director for โrushingโ it through and killing all the characters, and ruining the characters?
I personally have to disagree. The theme of the show since season one is the loss of humanity when it comes to money. itโs an extremely dark topic/lesson that portrayed half of the worlds problems. capitalism, human trafficking, lack of empathy, etc. itโs not supposed to be happy or cute, itโs a literal life and death scenario.
in season 1, the show focuses on the games, how the games work, peoples roles in society/poverty. it was so carefully made that every character was realistic in the situation, including the vips, and the players.
in season 2 and 3, i realized the show has a lot of symbolism. the baby signifying innocence in a corrupt world, and a product of the playersโ (myunggi, junhee) past, representing the last bit of their humanity. i was extremely invested in the show and how much they kept to the storyline of how corrupt people are. the last bit, before gihun died, was amazing to me. when he said โhumans arenโt horses, humans areโฆโ the show was trying to show โwhat are humans? from what weโve seen, are they evil, good, greedy, inhumane, empathetic?โ which is what the show makes you question.
i loved how they wrote gihun throughout the seasons. i love how they showed how much of a gambler he is without actually saying it. we see in the beginning of squid game on how he bets on horses and his gambling addiction. he gets into the games, thinks itโs cruel, wins, then wants to take the flight to see his daughter. instead of seeing his daughter to make up for the fact of being a terrible father, he rejoins the games and gambles with peoples life and makes sacrifices with peoples lives for the rebellion. he put everyone in danger and gambled whether or not the rebellion was gonna be successful or not with their lives. then he couldnโt stand himself with the fact that he went against his own moral code and sacrificed peoples lives so he blamed it on daeho and killed him, which went more against his moral code. flash forward to the end of s3, when he died for a random baby whoโs mother he met not even a week ago, instead of living to see his own daughter. truly a nuanced character, i love it so much.
i truly love how the side characters were written. little information about them, but you can conclude so much from it. in my opinion, thatโs good writing.
and i do feel like a lot of squid game fans are too naive and have too much of an infatuation with their favorite characters to notice the actual meaning of constant death/capitalism/loss of humanity.
however, my only objection to my argument is that we didnโt get enough content of the hwang brothers. i wouldโve loved to seen them interact more and talk it out after junho spent 4 years of his life looking for the game, and it only ended with a โwhy?โ and he left? that didnโt make much sense to me.
other than that, i rate the show a 4.5/5
