I'm an avid reader who couldn't even get past the first 10 chapters. The trailer looked interesting enough and it was Kindle Unlimited, so I downloaded it. However, the characters are boring and you can easily tell that it was written by a man. The concept is itself is interesting and what drew me in: the idea of having your soulmate made through a DNA match.
But... the characters aren't compelling to me. It doesn't pass the Bechdel test. The first perspective chapter is just a woman (whose name I don’t even remember) who is a 37 year old divorcee whose whole personality is lusting after the guy she matched with and talking about how her biological clock to have children is ticking. The spoilers I read tell me that this all has a purpose, but this has been done so many times.
The serial killer angle was interesting to me! I love thriller and suspense combined with romance! And then he's just another incel, whining about how women are deceiving men by using filters and makeup. I could find about 40,000 of him on reddit.
As a reader and writer myself, I don't like books that I can guess what's going to happen. It's supense; I want to be surprised! Perhaps this was the book for other people, and maybe I'll like the series better.
