This movie was a woke cashgrab that was very unfaithful to the positive, light atmosphere of the games. First, Mario and Luigi's character is hollow. Mario is stubborn, Luigi is cowardly, and they have a strong brotherly relationship. It was disrespectful that high-profile actors voiced them instead of Charles Martinet, which was an obvious cash grab. Mario and Luigi are forgettable overall. Toad is brave, which is the opposite of his character in the games. Princess Peach is portrayed as a "perfect" girlboss character and is bland and forgettable. Expanding on her backstory and why she is fighting to protect her kingdom would have done wonders for her character. Bowser is just as bad, he is a simp and is jealous that Mario is getting Peach's attention. In the games, Bowser is power hungry and marrying Peach is more of a side goal. Jack Black voiced him well, but they made Bowser very one note. What irritated me the most was the movie's unexpected dark tone. Bowser is more ruthless than usual, and sacrificing his prisoners at his "wedding" was overdoing it. The most disturbing thing in this movie was the suicidal luma character who wanted to die and said some horrible stuff in the movie. This is a PG KIDS MOVIE, save that stuff for the R rated movies, dark humor like this in a kids movie is insensitive, off-putting, and disturbing. Besides the characters, the story is overly simple, and the pacing is extremely quick. For example, Donkey Kong should have beaten Mario, and Luigi gets barely any screen time. I used to hold Nintendo in high regards, but they have been getting woke, lazy, and anti-consumer this last few years (Splatoon 3 idols, Mario Strikers battle League lacking content, Splatoon 3 announcing paid dlc before the game was even out, encouraging piracy by removing the 3ds/Wii U shop, and having zero quality control on the switch eshop, etc). Overall, I'm disappointed in the Mario Movie, and I'm done supporting Nintendo.
