This version messed up the original message. If Mulan didn't have some magical Chi then she wouldn't have succeeded at all. Her only strength was supernatural ability and her only struggle was keeping her secret and conforming with the men.
The original Mulan struggled with improving herself as a soldier and showed that you don't need to have natural strength to succeed. Hard work is important. She even showed strength in feminine traits. In this poorly done remake, all Mulan's femininity has been washed away except for her body. Basically saying you aren't strong unless you reject your feminine side and have talent, which is a horrible message. I know that's not the initial theme but the poor execution gives off the wrong point.
The antagonist falcon-woman (forgot the name) was very vague in her motives and backstory. Did she want to cause chaos? Did she only want to rejoin the empire as an equal to everyone else? Importantly, WHY was she discriminated against for her abilities and Mulan was praised? In my eyes, she could have just been misunderstood. What did Mulan do after to prevent other people from being banished just for being different? Seemingly nothing.
