The movie left me unsatisfied.
First the pros that I wouldn't really wanna regard
-All the tiny little references
-Youtuber Cameos
-Sparky the Dog (for some reason)
-The Animatronics (look cute and unsettling)
-The Balloon Boy Gag
-Abby's acting being delivered perfectly
Now for the talking points
-The Plot
The Plot was pretty good. Mike and Garrett's scenes were did do a good job with hinting at Springtrap being the big bad and give some insight on some other scenes earlier in the movie. Abby's involvement with the animatronic hijinks was well-thought even if it was rough around the edges. Even if it has a good plot I feel like it also has baggage. The subplot regarding Mike and Abby's aunt although playing into the story in a good way was unnecessary or at the least been slightly shorter. William Afton's motives weren't really explained enough in the movie in the final act. Knowing from the games, William was usually one that would hide amongst the shadows usually being in the dark with no counters. That's why the Missing Childrens' Incident was left unsolved. That's why William overnight would dismantle the animatronics in FNaF 3? Why would he take on a target with some sort of protection? Maybe he would've tried to get close with Abby when he was revealed and then Vanny and Mike would fight him. There's also the fact that sometimes the movie forgets who their characters are. Freddy mercilessly killing the Aunt was unneccessary and straight out of left field for a lost child. You may say that it was William's doing but there must be a line that's should be drawn from out of character and in-character because of X. There's also the fifth child from the Missing Childrens Incident. I was confused about him because I never really knew which side he was on. Well I guess that's all I have to say about him and the plot as a whole. Good plot, rough around the edges.
The Scares
It never really had them... Pretty underwhelming but I would really be more satisfied if the horror was done a little bit more. Even if it tried, it kinda felt flat. Still follows the steady decline in horror that started with Security Breach. Ruin did soften Security Breach's problems but is still a talking point regarding the franchise. The novels do paint a better picture of the horror at anything Fazbear Entertainment touches. So maybe they could've tried to take more points from the uncanny valley-like dread of the first few games, the brutality of the books, and try to take on some inspiration from fan projects like the analog horror vids. A lot of them do well with psychological horror so maybe to have it be PG-13 dread would be at every corner. It doesn't have to be gorey, just instil fear. They were somewhat tied up about lore (but granted I understand, FNAF is a really lore-heavy franchise) and did somewhat forget abt the horror aspect making it more thriller than horror.
Matthew Lilard as Springtrap
Honestly, Matthew didn't do justice for the aubergine menace. William's voice although was powerful had this softness which strikes fear and dread. But Matthew kinda went for a more stereotypical serial killer serious semi-yelling voice. His acting was handled well but the voice just sets me off.
Also, the Springlock scene... yea also underwhelming and wasn't brutal enough but it was PG-13 and could be more painful to see in the R-rated cut.
Final Verdict
It ain't for everyone. I felt like it was a good movie but it did leave me unsatisfied in some parts. 6/7 out of 10.
