Julia Roberts and the Obamas produced an apocalypse drama. Most events in the film are inexplicable and unrealistic. The funny thing is, while I watched it, I found it tense, exciting and fascinating. It was only afterwards, when I thought about each scenario, that I realized it was complete bollocks. The socio-economic dynamics of the white and black families are interesting. Roberts is intensely dislikeable, and her once beautiful mouth looks like a piece of liver on the turn. But nothing explains why the cultured black financier on the board of the opera allowed his daughter to cover herself in ink like a crack ho.

"With an effort I managed to restrain my incredulous laughter. The very phrases were worn so threadbare that they evoked no image except that of a turbaned 'character' leaking sawdust at every pore as he pursued a tiger through the Bois de Boulogne" Nick’s thoughts on Gatsby’s clichéd imaginings in 1922 come to mind when watching Sheridan’s in 1923. It is hard to watch such an astonishingly beautiful series as 1883, then find out that the future of the Dutton family rests on a man who can’t do up the buttons on his shirt at dinner. However - it’s still good enough to look forward to the second season.

Taylor Sheridan has made an astonishingly raw, beautiful and historic series. Knowing that it is the beginnings of the Dutton family on their plains crossing adds to it, but I think it is much better than Yellowstone. It is perhaps the most moving television series I have seen. The reviews that question the realism of whitened teeth and lack of railroad use have a point, but so was Juliet played by a boy originally; so let that go and remember that there are still people driving or walking towards new homes around Europe.
