Many reviews I have read have a negative view of this movie calling it dull, boring and flat. I can understand some of this sentiment for it is far from a pleasant or uplifting film. However although it is dark and solemn it is a biography told with great depth. Bringing the character of both John Raskin and Effy Gray into sharp focus.
He is a cruel and hateful creature but only to his wife, whose long-suffering existence withers in response to his neglect and outright emotional torture. The scenery is spectacular, as are the costumes and the actors play their parts convincingly. I was affected deeply by watching this film. I was left with a sense of dread for those women who lived during this time period. They who had so little control over their own lives if they were to marry badly.
This doesn't mean I didn't like this movie because a movie that reaches you deeply has done well. And happily at the end there was a reckoning of sorts. Effy's life took a turn for the better. If you're considering watching this film I think you should give it a chance.
