An excellent read, particularly for those with an interest in history. I liked the fact that it's set in Chicago in the late 19th century when the growth in the fortunes of the wealthy elites in America depended on ruthless exploitation and abuse of poor and desperate immigrants, particularly from eastern Europe. This is a novel written with consumate skill and impressive knowledge of Chicago's development as a city in this period. It has strong female characters and a plot that will keep most nightime readers awake in the hope that good can prevail over evil in the dark times that the book is set.
