I read "Emma" with great interest. Queen Emma of England was an educated woman who deftly navigated the rocky political waters of early England. Ms. Strachan portrayed the persistant violence of the Viking age, making it all the more remarkable that Queen Emma survived 68 years. I appreciated the map, list of important 11th century players, appendices and Saxon, Norman and Viking family trees. I have small quibbles with the editing and organization of the material, which is based on documents of the time period. All told, I read "Emma" from cover to cover!
