I could not help but think about the current genocide we are seeing unfold on our digitized screens while reading this. Of course, we cannot make comparisons but Diop reminds us, "The case was closed. It's just that eternity is so short, whatever they might say. The lake of blood had already dried up. For many months vultures had picked the corpses clean of their last shreds of putrid flesh Then they flew away toward some other distant grave, of which there was no shortage in the world" (p.180) He expertly paints the question: what is human? and how do we come to this conclusion? Through the point of view of survivors, resistance fighters, and even the Interhamwe & the colonizer (the oppressors), Diop examines these question and leaves a chilling testimony that is indeed the work of a storyteller of the eternal to give us accounts that we should never forget.
