This book connected me with a magic that I think can be found in the souls of all black folk who are blessed enough to be open to it.......our histories are often told to BEGIN with slavery.
This story reminded me that we were and are so much more than descendants of enslaved people. And that our station at that fateful time was nothing to be ashamed of; because a lesser people would not have survived. We not only survived but thrived and some even managed to hold on to some of our magic.
I love the way this tale was woven into true life events, it made it feel all the more possible and all the more heart wrenching.
I finished “ We were eight years in power” recently, I can’t wait to start “Between the world and me” Three books gifted to me by my husband.
On one of our first dates, I took him to see Ta-Nehisi Coates at U of D Mercy in Detroit. He spoke about his book Between the World and Me and he spoke about Reparations. Something I had never truly considered before that day. Even though I’d heard of the idea. For some reason it just seemed silly because the weight of what has happened in a past I didn’t feel connected to, to people I’ve never met, regretfully was lost on me. I thought I knew my history, but I didn’t know how ignorant I really was.
I can say that I view Mr Coates as a conductor of sorts, a conductor of knowledge that is so important for us ALL to know. In order to truly know ourselves and to understand our CURRENT station in this life and how to steer ourselves and our progeny through to the other side.
