I am FLOORED. I had seen some promos and was vaguely interested, but as soon as I turned it on at 10pm, and now find myself still stunned, sitting on the couch at 5am... yeah. It’s good. It’s REALLY good.
To be upfront, I’m 23, and I enjoy animated shows ranging from devilman crybaby to Stephen universe. I think this finds itself as a good balance between the aforementioned SU and dreamworks’ other project, Voltron. And as far as 80’s reboots goes, this one really outshines it’s orginal.
Where the oh She-Ra was nothing more then a ploy to sell toys, and the stories and characters were just flat, with the same plot repeated over and over... SPOP breathes actual life into it. The characters are relatable, they have back stories, and their own moral codes. That badies sent just nameless goons, you can actually understand their point of view. The plot actually delves into the world and pushes the characters to interact in ways that makes them grow into something entirely new.
And of course I must mention how much I love the way they have geared it for a younger audience. Just as the original was, SPOP aims to teach girls that they too have the power to be strong and to fight. But it goes beyond that as well. The character designs aren’t cookie cutter idealized women with different hair. There are girls ranging from young to mature, all with different and natural body types, skin tones, and world views. And the addition of normalized gay relations ships makes my queer heart soar!
This show allows for kids to see that it’s alright to change, to let go of toxic relationships, to make the descions that feel right.
I could really go on and on, but I should really sleep after chugging through the whole season!
