This production is smart, audacious, sexy, dramatic and brimming with ideas. The singing really was as good as it gets. Pratt and the Peruvian tenor were thrilling! This production has set the bar very high indeed. I saw Joan Sutherland singing this role at age 12. I’m now 61. I’ve spent half of my life living in Italy. This is the finest Opera Australia new production I have seen since returning to Australia in 1992. On every level. After the banality of Livermore’s Aida last month this was a revelation.(to be fair , acts 3 & 4 were sublime. The conductor struggled with the big set pieces). Everyone has the RIGHT to see this production! I’m going back. This is what true opera lovers in Australia wait for. Full of pride that Hoffmann had it’s world premiere here in Sydney.
