Watching in 2024, I assumed it was a satire and enjoyed it. The characters, the plot, the cliches were all so on target ridiculous and the dialogue was funny. I read the old reviews from when the film came out and was amazed to find that most of the critics had taken it at face value as a rom-com. I watched it because I had read "Ayoade on Top", Richard Ayoade's funny and obsessional book-length discussion of the film. He also seemed to take the film as a rom-com.
Everything looks like satire to me these days. Popular culture seems so ridiculous it looks as if it must be intentional. I can't tell the difference.
Anyway, as a satire it's fun, not bad. As a sincere rom-com it's execrable. I assume the big name cast members read the script as a satire or they would not have been in it.
