Okay, so I'm halfway done with this show and while it is a very refreshing concept, it has half-baked writing. The most interesting characters are the ML and his employees, but they are the least explored. While the FL's storyline is all over the place.
The FL is supposed to be a poor girl who is trying to make it as a children's content creator and has faced hardships from a young age; she is the child of a single mother, who was constantly being threatened by loan sharks and had no friends when she met a young boy (second ML) who became her friend and then saved her and disappeared. Years later she has been searching for him and finally finds him but they beat around the bush so much for this small reveal. On the other hand, the FL has the personality of a naive schoolgirl who thinks the world is all good and fair; she has been mocked and stabbed in the back by all her coworkers and yet has no witts to stay in this very public and competitive industry.
She has two major scandals that destroy her reputation and lead to her losing her job and home. It's like the writers didn't put any effect into fleshing out her motivations outside of being the ML's love interest, and even that is only puppy-dog and cheesy. She behaves as though she doesn't know what being a content creator entails and looks constantly lost. Like girl come on behave a little smarter!! Also, the acting for her role is just okay, nothing to write home about, I think the actress could have done a better job with a better script. Overall I don't think she adds much to the story other than being a girl who the ML fell in love with.
Okay on to the ML; who is a very unique character and has very strong motivations and clear ideals. His whole I'm a criminal who is trying to be better and help other ex-cons is a great storyline and genuinely makes you want to root for him and his people. The idea of second chances, and that a person can be both good and bad is very strong here and I think the whole story should have been told from their perspective. But with all this, we don't see the conflict that arises; these are actual thugs who were sent to jail for their criminal behavior and instead of creating redemption arcs for them we are left with some dull moments of growth.
However, I'm in love with acting from the ML here; the cool and calm mobster becomes a puddle of mess in front of his girl, and while a strict boss he is a kind and insightful person to his employees. His dual personalities are quite good and should have been more complex.
Overall the story had a great premise, but mediocre writing, acting, and pacing. Like many K-dramas this show suffers from too many plots syndrome, where instead of having the characters have flaws and grow from them they create random plots you can see the resolutions coming from half a mile away. the characters are all vanilla and the suspense building is too much when you as the audience already know the answers. They had a great underlying theme of second chances and turning over new leaves but wasted it on a very cheesy and subpar comedy path.
