This movie got us back into a theatre! The idea of an epic 4 part Western was intriguing. In an era where fast and furious special effects, explosions, robots and cheap animation seem to prevail, here is a movie worth seeing. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, you need to watch and think, wait for the pieces of the puzzle to fall together. Are we so in need of instant gratification that many cannot appreciate many characters with parallel storylines slowly making their way forward? Complaints that Kevin Costner wasn’t in the first part of the movie, really? It’s not a story about him, it’s about the western movement. He placed his character where he fit into the story. Yes, the opening sequences unfurl slowly. People need to think and wait. And put the pieces together. A woman shoots her brutal husband and leaves with the baby. His sons are sent to retrieve her and the baby. A man and his son are killed because they are building on Indian land that they think they have legally bought. Some scoundrel is making flyers advertising a new city out west, Horizon, and people are paying money for land that is actually legally Indian territory. The Indians are not happy, massacres happen. Horrible people also massacre innocent natives in their village. This is an epic movie of vast proportions. And it’s 1 of 4. We enjoyed the teaser at the end and will be back for Chapter 2 in August. Clearly from some of these reviews some people want easy storylines, faster moving plots. But this movie is what it is. Watch and listen. Give it time to come together. It will. The cinematography is spectacular. The actors are great. Kevin, you did good. You waited years to develop this, you put your own money into it. Bravo!
