It's a movie based on keeping silent to survive, with the protagonist being a deaf girl. My issue with this movie is that you're lead to believe the family of the deaf girl have the upper hand because they "know how to live in silence", but this makes no sense as the deaf girl is pretty loud at times and doesnt know it, like when her dog is barking loudly, her making a noise in the pharmacy or her calling her friend (not knowing if his phone was on silent or not )putting him in danger and then having his voice with the volume on, you'd think after your mother was attacked by noise seeking bats you'd turn the volume on your tablet down even if you were deaf, you'd see the icon for volume just to be sure. It was at that point I realised if the movie writers weren't going to make the characters live by the rules they created then I just can't root for the characters, it's like they all have a deathwise. At no point do they try to muffle their cough like the Grandmother or Muffle there scream of pain like the mother with her bite. It's just really stupid actions carried out by a family that "knows how to live in silence "
The family also don't really use sign language to the fullest extent only sometimes signing and whispering or even just talking at a low volume. I think they clearly missed an opportunity to have the whole movie in sign language from her perspective maybe that could of saved it. Even so the movie is just full of plot holes and forced plot situations like when the kid asks to ride with the Dads friend in his car but suddenly decides to switch cars just before the Dads Friend crashes.
The creatures as well are not very convincing there's not much told to the audience about them, we know they came from a cave and eat meat but I wonder what they ate in that sealed cave for hundreds of years to reproduce into those numbers. They are also fairly strong after living with what has to be very little food supply and they're not afraid of sunlight, I just couldn't see how this would be a realistic apocalyptic level scenario. I think with movies like a Quiet place and bird box if you're going to do a movie that's a similar concept since it's already been done you either do it differently ,do it better or don't do it at all. And the writers should of chose the latter.
