Underrated. I rewatched Moon and I was still spellbound the entire time from start to finish.
Claustrophobic, suspenseful, and a chilling yet heartbreaking story. Sam Bell's entire life was fake. A construct. He was expendable and Moon does such an amazing job of really putting you there and then in his shoes.
One thing I adore about it is the attention to detail. All the little bits and pieces that really drive home this movie. Only High Life(2018) has recreated that spellbinding sci-fi story magic for me. By the end, as Sam stares out of the window and sees the other Sam whizzing away to Earth, I felt such existential dread and just had to take a minute to think about my own life.
The acting is superb, Sam Rockwell completely nailed it. He really brought out the differences between the two Sams in such a clear way. Kevin Spacey, despite not appearing in the film, does such a great job voicing the robot.
The cinematography is superb. The special effects hold up really well and the visuals are breathtaking. The solemn loneliness of the moon combined with the beautiful soundtrack by the ever so talented Clint Mansell had me entranced. He did such an incredible job with Pi(1998) and he has once again.
The plot is simple and straightforward to understand which does make the film a tad simple at times. The pacing near the end felt a bit too fast for the slow buildup that had been happening from the beginning, but I still enjoyed it. If the aim was to make me anxious as to whether Sam would make it off the moon base, then they sure did a banging job.
This certainly isn't a movie for the average moviegoer but if you appreciate a gorgeously crafted sci-fi film that really leaves you thinking for days, then this is definitely a movie for you.
They really don't make movies like this anymore.
