A mountain is a perfect metaphor to explain how difficult it is for immigrants to graduate, entering in high school. The book Mountains by Max R. Jean Paul describes the obstacles he faced as a young black man and how he used education to overcome those barriers. He also credits his family from Haiti as an instrumental part of his success. I would encourage teachers to purchase the book as a springboard for conversations in the classroom. Although our school originally purchased the book for our ESOL students, his writings are truly inspiring for teachers and administrators alike.
