While most people point fingers at 2K for "ruining this game", they miss the point of what this game is. It's an arcade game first than an actual basketball game. This game does require you to buy in game microtransactions if you want to unlock your favorite players. Well....after you unlocked everyone and passed NBA Season mode...there's not much to do than game on online/local multiplayer matches which ultimately is what this arcade basketball video game is about. Playing with others is the main point and unlocking players does become tedious after a while but if it doesn't require you to grind for players then there's ultimately nothing to do for single player.
The card packs are annoying but randomizing adds a bit of mystery but is looked at as obviously bad because of what many game developers have taken advantage of in recent years. That's what ultimately made this game and any other NBA game have bad public relations with people who play them religiously.
All in all Sabertooth developed a shiny and charismatic arcade Basketball game that remains tainted by the forever notion of "surprise mechanics for your dollar if you want your favorite player". Great game and fun if you're looking for a arcade experience.
