It seems like most of the positive reviews are by neuro-typical people and the negative ones are by people on the spectrum. Listen to the people on the spectrum! It didn’t make them feel good to watch it! That’s a problem.
I think this show is more about the experience of being a caretaker than of being a person with neuro-divergence. Which would be fine - it’s a valid experience - if there weren’t already plenty of shows about that and not enough about the latter.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I know what it’s like to be portrayed as a stereotype. At first I was grateful to see us on TV at all - to be acknowledged as existing - but after awhile I realised we had a right to be portrayed in a way we identified with - as characters with unique stories who just happened to be queer. And in the last 10 years that’s happened! We’ve started to tell our own stories.
Now people with neuro-divergence are asking for the same thing. It’s their right. It’s possible and it’s time.
