Life as the new kid isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be in Jerry Craft’s “New Kid”. Jordan Banks is an aspiring artist who could reach so much potential if his parents would send him to the art school of his dreams. Instead, he is sent to Riverdale Academy Day School, well known for its academics. This book takes a humorous approach on big topics like physical and verbal bullying based on race and financial status, as well as peer pressure amongst other students. In doing so, winning the Non-Violent Change Coretta Scott King Award and the John Newbery Medal for the Most Distinguished Contribution to American Literature for Children. Jeff Kinney, author of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, describes the book as “Funny, sharp, and totally real.” Readers who enjoy the timeless series “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” would definitely enjoy this reading.
