I’m so disappointed with this movie. The animation style is confused. There are some really underwhelming design choices. No specific style exists. The music also sounds like a high school theater production. The timing of the songs is terrible and they lack any unifying style, too. I’m sure Julia Michaels is a wonderful person and she has had a hit song but that does not mean she is a sure-shot Disney movie songwriter. Where is Lin Manuel Miranda!!?! If Disney was planning a true celebratory movie they didn’t exactly stack the cards in their favor. They didn’t hire any of their trusted hit-makers. The characters are all endearing but they don’t fully develop anyone—not even Asha or the King. It’s just weird and not entertaining. As a parent, it was difficult to watch. I was really hoping my biracial daughter would have a better original movie with a POC main character.
