I have had this book for 40 years, my mum bought it in the 1950s. I cannot believe I had left it so long to read. Its a great story from the historical and social perspective of early settlers in America. I enjoyed learning the true story of Elizabeth Winthrop and the trials and triumphs of her life from England to settling in America while the Dutch were ruling. It tells of her early childhood to her three marriages and her becoming the matriarch of the family. A strong woman who makes the most of her life challenges. The historical aspect adds to the story about how the natives and immigrants co existed in 17th century America.
