For those of you rating this movie as 1 or 2 on the basis that this is a remake, allow me to take you out of the bubble. This is NOT a remake. Alive was based on a book written by a British author, two or three years after the accident. “Sociedad de la Nieve” is based on a books written 36 years after the accident and whose author is a closed friend of the survivors. Alive failed BIG TIME, to show authenticity, emotions and to tell the true story. It didn’t even have the correct names of those who passed and by the end of the story, all actors were fit and healthy, plus it is heavily focused on the anthropophagy aspect. Sociedad de la Nieve, not only shows you how their bodies started deteriorating by losing weight (pssst! Not all men grow beard), but the emotions and camaraderie among those who were alive, it pays homage to those who did not make it, and it does not fell in the narrative of heroism or having a protagonist figure like Alive did. Sociedad de la Nieve is a more complete, realistic and a way better movie than the other two. And when you watch the movie in Spanish, you know you are listening to the same accent the survivors spoke during these events, something that contributes to the authenticity of the movie (of course, they still speak with that same accent). And on the top of that, Sociedad de la Nieve delivers an amazing message that Alive failed to deliver big time. Team work, tolerance, fighting for your friends and your family and Faith in God are fundamental aspects of our lives.
If I could give this movie a 10 star, I would. Hands down, the best movie of the year and possibly the decade.
