What do people SEE in this book?
Spoiler alert: I was mostly enjoying CFS until Marion’s reunion with Genet. That scene killed the book and made me hate Marion. Forced to show up at his door (why?) Genet is obviously sick and in need of a doctors attention. Instead of doing what his instincts tell him, he treats her with disdain as she scrounges for advil in his medicine cabinet. Then he “takes” her, as if it was his right, and over her protest, has unprotected sex and he is relieved when she slips out into the night. Is she carrying a child? Who cares? The irony of this given his own birth is not even an afterthought of Marion, or it seems, the author.
It’s a first novel, and by an accomplished doctor, so I do appreciate the desire to sew everything up neatly. But I wished Marion could have evolved some, rather than ultimately coming across as callous and self centered.
