Found it tedious and tries to be too smart. Two and a half hours of things just happening and at least half the characters reacting to them. That's literally it. We have an oil tanker beaching itself, a plane falling out the sky, a loud noise, a collision buildup of self-driving Tesla cars, intimidating ominous herd of deer, and explosions erupting from a nearby city. And are we owed at least an explanation for all this happening? No. Just an ending of the little girl stuffing her face and watching an episode of “Friends”.
Now some might argue that this is the whole point of the movie – that things are happening inexplicably and no one can provide a straight answer. It was even, at one point, said in the movie. Well, I call this total cop-out nonsense. There are many, many movies that features world-ending apocalypses without any explanation and we’re mostly shown the survival of some family in said apocalypse. This was just flat-out boring. All we see are two dour families that are barely able to even stand looking at each other. At worst, we have a misanthropic mother who hardly gives anyone the time of day and a smart-aleck teenage girl with a big mouth who just doesn’t know when to zip it.
Granted, there are some scenes that piqued my interest, like the encompassing deer, the Tesla collision buildup, and the scene where the teenage boy got sick from radiation, although I later got confused as to why him only and not others - it’s not like radiation discriminates.
Ultimately, as much as I tried liking this movie, I could just not. I kept myself watching it through to the end because I held out whatever hope I had that there is an answer to all of this. Although it was mentioned in the movie, the only takeaway I got from it is that chaos happens, nobody knows how it started or who’s behind it all, and we all have to put up with it. Such an original message. It’s not like this has been shown many times before. Terminator. The Matrix. Cargo. BirdBox. A Quiet Place, and many others
I may rewatch it again in the future and provide an update, but for now I’m giving it 2 out of 5 stars.
