I've never read the book so am reviewing on this series alone (without comparing the two.)
This was a very engaging story right from the beginning. All of the main characters were well-developed and interesting. In particular, I enjoyed watching the male and female main characters grow up (the girl's scenes with her father, Mark Ruffalo) and the boy (Werner's) scenes with his sister. Their shared interest in listening to the Professor while growing up was delightful.
Though the circumstances of WWII were horrific, the passion and romance portrayed by the main characters was refreshing. Their love brings hope to a seemingly cruel and heartless world. Yes, there were some violent scenes but don't we all wish to have the devotion portrayed by Werner's character?
