I thought this movies premise was fantastic, and as people say it could've been better. A lot of the complaints I don't agree with though. Yes Eddie Murphy's character was more noticeably rude and clearly trying to make things difficult for Ezra but Julia Louis-Dreyfus' character was not innocent. Amira is right about feeling like a novelty to her future mother-in-law. Ignorance isn't an excuse for how she acted, yes sometimes it's just idiotic and forgivable things but googling black culture to get to know your sons future wife isn't how it works. If she truly wanted to get to know Amira, the person, she would've talked and listened to her.
That's my main gripe, which im only saying because i felt other reviews let her JLD's character off to easily. Despite this I found the movie really good and sort of realistic if two cultures were suddenly blended like this. Even without cultural differences this can be difficult. The movie does a fairly good job showing the challenges the couples face trying to mitigate disaster, while showing two sides of the parents, the overly protective and the ignorant.
I think some people were maybe two hard on the film, it's got a great meet cute story that should've lasted longer. They could've shown us more to show the connection without a montage, these people have and built toward the finale differently. The movie itself couldve been longer, had a sequel or even been better suited as a limited series.
Anyways, good movie, maybe only 3.7 but I'll round up for what I consider great performances from the main cast, especially Lauren London and Jonah Hill. Who genuinely have great chemistry and display the awkward struggle they're family put them in.
