I had great hopes for this series but I left it after 5 episodes. It didn't seem as if the producers/directors really knew what they wanted the series to be. Dark drama? Dark comedy? I enjoy "black comedies" but the "comedic" sequences are too self-conscious. Painfully so.
The Nazi torture scenes are gratuitous and over the top. There are enough horrifying and completely accurate stories about the conditions of the camps and the treatment of the prisoners to draw upon without those. For example, that contrived chessboard scene in the first episode was completely unnecessary. No wonder Jewish groups complained.
The "villains" come off as just that, "villains" -- more suited for comic books. Perhaps the killer here is that I simply don't like or care about any of the characters. I tried, but I've given up.
