I am a huge fan of the book and the original 1994 miniseries. With that said, this portrayal was a big disappointment. The character’s personalities were completely off and not matching the original story at all. While I understand that this version was meant to be more modernized and a retelling of the story, this version goes beyond that and tells quite a different story. Not to mention the jumping around into the past and present is off putting and really fails to develop the characters properly as the 1994 series did a great job at. So many aspects of this version are different and do not follow the original story at all. The biggest of these is Nadine, whose story is completely different going all the way back to the beginning when she met Larry. Her character was completely merged (with Larry’s eventual wife in the original) and mashed up. Honestly, the only character that even came close to matching the original storyline was Harold Lauder. Mother Abigail’s character was even way off and Fran’s character was not even close. The more I think about it, the more disappointed I am with every other character and their storyline in this version. So much that I’m dropping it from the 2 stars I was going to give it, down to 1.
