The following review is my opinion.
I was first attracted to this film by the massive movie poster I saw while driving into the city. After I watched the trailer, I thought "Wow, extraordinary! Definitely a must-see!"
Then I went and watched it. Halfway through the film, I thought, this is really not as fantastic as I thought it would have been.
The movie centres around three men and their three female partners talking about their feelings for each other. The film is made up of roughly 85% dialogue and 15% action. Most of the action were computer generated special effects, nothing overtly fresh like audiences have never seen before in similar films. CGI permeated the film like fillers. I couldn't help wondering if the special effects were taken out of the film, what would this film have going for it? Basically, 1.5 hour of mediocre conversations back and forth.
The climax was based on a dialogue/monologue explaining the past and how it may affect the future which included some reenactments. The ending was also a monologue.
The plot was as dry and plain as peanut butter on bread. It was about a group of people trying to persuade good guys into getting a powerful bad guy who is trying to yep you guess it "destroy the world." That is what all hero movies are about.
For 200 M, could the producers not have thought of a novel idea?
Granted, the CGI was second to none. The sets, costumes and and props were fabulous. When you have a whooping budget, that level of production is second nature. But other than that, what else did the film have going for it? Home & Away has better scripting than this and for a far lower budget.
I paid $15 to watch CGI and a bunch of people talk leading up to hearing Johnny Depp talk. Other than that, where was the actual film-making? They're lucky that Johnny Depp is a good actor.
Go and see it if you will. I cannot tell people what to watch or not watch. I will only recommend a film if I felt it was genuinely good. For this I only have to say "sorry."
