Perhaps in comparison to worse serials, this one would not be considered as bad - this is the only positive thing I can say about ZGH.
The main characters were really difficult to like. The fact that the story is written by a woman is ironic since it is mostly about the subjugation of women.
Women who want the right to dress as they want, be on equal terms with men or pursue a meaningful professional career are depicted as lacking morals and seen as fundamentally flawed.
Who are the paragons of virtue in this sick tale? A woman with no self-respect and no self-love, who is prepared to stay in a relationship with a man who has already left her for someone else, not to mention who belittles and humiliates her at every opportunity - WHY oh why does she not just walk away? It is not selfless or saintly to allow yourself to be abused.
Media is a powerful tool, I do wonder who commissions these serials and why? The day Pakistan starts making plays about strong women, who don't need permission from anyone to practise their basic human rights, will be the day women in Pakistan will rise up against oppression, against being told to stay at home and people in Pakistan will no longer pray for a son.
