Amy Adams is an amazing actor. She plays a pivotal role in what is a very dark, thought provoking movie. Mental illness is explored in an unsettling way. You feel the heat and the stifling nature of Wind Gap. It is a town that fears those from outside and thus alienates. It demonstrates the damage that a mentally tortured mother can reap on her children.
It shows how child abuse can be covert not only to the family, itself but the whole community who suspect what is going on is wrong but do not want to cause disruption and unrest in their quiet town.
