This is a film that reinforces Truffaut's tenderness toward the young and normally helpless in society, hinting at what a human being might be like by growing up without human controls or social rules - something that we, in this age of "no rules," badly need.

As much as I've always enjoyed Canadian Film Board movies - original, intelligently presented, polished - this is one of the best. Taken from a true story, acted by the same people who lived it, this is such a touching, funny, haunting depiction of eight elderly women, left to cope for themselves, alone, in a lush wilderness. Watching and listening to them as they expose themselves with almost embarrassing candor - wow - you'll never find a film from commercial Hollywood to top it.

A remarkable study, partly making sense, partly almost fantasy. You never forget seeing it.

Won't win Academy Awards, but not intended to; just a lot of fun, chases, close calls, dangerous situations - and enjoyed for the talent involved.

A curiously dated approach to the race issue - certainly meant to be entertaining and never for/against anything about life & fantasy in an all Black world. Musical numbers add immeasurably to the mix.

They just don't make moving, inspirational films like this anymore!

A film (based on a true story) that breaks plenty of cinematic rules to bring a powerful story - emotional without being corny; true to the street life in L.A., filmed with audacious techniques to make the ugly almost beautiful. Not easily forgotten.

Everyone's right about this film; it is dark, brooding, frightening, terribly sad - and unforgettable.
