Yesterday I was in Shenzhen for an Easter Spa Trip at one of the top-rated spa places, only a few mins away by walking from the border of Futian Port.
I was overwhelmed with the amount of on-time-use plastic amenities the facility shoehorned the customers to use during their time in the spa. One-time use toothbrushes, socks, cups, straws, elastic hair bands, facial cotton pads, massive amounts of tissue paper, and even body towels.
The lady in the sauna room enthusiastically hand me one-time-use body towels and ripped off the excellent plastic wrapping in front of me before I could stop her. At that precise moment, she was ripping my heart too. I then told her that I will be absolutely fine using my last towel. She insisted that I should dry myself up from the pool. No doubt that her courtesy towards me came from a good place, but... I will be super cool using my last towel.
I restrained myself from the use of all the fancy one-time-use amenities laid out so nicely like they are waving at you to use them.
I have been to the Philippines, Switzerland, Greece, Poland, Prague, Cambodia, and Thailand (have been to some other places definitely but to name a few) doing my Spa trip. I guess no other place in the rest of the world will abuse the use of plastic like the way China is. I hope one day finally China will pull out from the excessive use of plastic, This is exponentially exploiting the planet.
Im not trying to be a morality police or anything. But the heavy use of plastic is tanking China already. China is so washed by pollution and the situation has no sign of being in remission. This is a very unsettling feeling and is not a healthy and sustainable way to live.
