Yes if Gatsby had agreed to run away. But he couldn't because he is averse to anything not proper. A conflicted Daisy finally clings on to her husband, though one must say one is not so sure whether she still loved Jay when she left with her family for a vacation in the end. Jay Gatsby did not deserve death. Or did he?! May be he did because he did not seize his moment- the moment Daisy was willing to run away with him. Jay wanted Daisy's love. The problem was that he also wanted a respectable social life which is never possible if you want to reunite with your love already married.
